You can not grow your church, Jesus can
Jesus said, "I will build My church." We are tasked with doing the work of evangelism and discipleship. The building of your church is the work of God, not yours. However, you are responsible for spreading the gospel and making disciples. Do not get discouraged if your church does not grow as quickly as you would like. Trust that God is in control and He will Build His Church.
Nowhere in Scripture does God say that we are to be about the business of getting more people in the church, making our numbers bigger, or expanding our programs to draw more people in. None of these things are the work that we have been commissioned to do. So, what is our work?
Our work is to evangelize and make disciples. We are to share the gospel with those who do not know Christ and we are to help new believers grow in their faith. These things are difficult enough without adding the burden of trying to grow the church. So, let us focus on doing the work that God has called us to do and trust that He will Build His Church.
If we keep our eyes on the task that Jesus gave us and evangelize and disciple then the church will grow from a result of that. We need to remember that we are not responsible for the church, God is. Our job is simply to obey what He has called us to do and let Him take care of the rest.
This is a difficult thing for many of us to wrap our minds around because we live in a culture that is all about growth. We are taught from a young age that if we want to be successful in anything we have to grow. While this is true in many areas of life, it does not apply to the church. The church is not something that we can grow on our own, it is something that God grows.
It can be tempting to try and take matters into our own hands when we see that the church is not growing as quickly as we would like it too. However, this is not our job. Our job is simply to obey what Jesus has called us to do and trust that He will Build
Many of us find it difficult to accept, because we want our efforts to pay off. We want to see the fruit of our labor and sometimes it can be discouraging when we don't see the numbers growing as quickly as we would like. However, if we trust in God and His promises then we can know that He is faithful and will Build His Church.
When you focus on doing the work of evangelism and discipleship, you can be encouraged knowing that you are obedient to what God has called you to do.
